DJ databases: 134,147 profiles on Resident Advisor

A DJ database is a public name file: DJ, city, often a lineup, often a mix. The largest living club file is Resident Advisor. Attack Magazine counted 134,147 artist profiles in it on 26 May 2025. Berlin alone: 12,829. This file is dated 8 September 2026.

There is no official world register of DJs. Club and electronic, wedding and event, mix archives and hire catalogues sit in different files. The files barely talk to each other.

What is a DJ database?

Four jobs that share one name.

1. Club graph. Artist, venue, promoter, event, lineup. That is RA.
2. Ranking. Votes or streams. That is the DJ Mag Top 100 and DJ Rankings.
3. Mix archive. Set, tracklist, date. That is MixesDB and 1001Tracklists.
4. Hire catalogue. Wedding, corporate, birthday, a price. That is Eventzone, Djaayz, GigSalad.

Search for “every DJ in the world” and you land in job 1 or job 4, then notice the other job is missing.

Which DJ lists existed before the web?

The first industrial DJ file was not a website. It was a record pool.

On 2 June 1975, disco DJs met at David Mancuso’s Loft in New York, among them Walter Gibbons, Larry Levan and Tee Scott. They wrote a Declaration of Intent: exchange between labels and club DJs, membership $2. By the late 1970s more than 30 pools were running. Labels shipped promos to about 3,500 DJs in those pools. Club charts named DJs as reporters, not as a people register.

Billboard launched Disco Action on 26 October 1974, first as a New York club top 10, first number one: Gloria Gaynor, “Never Can Say Goodbye”. Record Mirror had a disco column from 21 September 1974. James Hamilton took it on 28 June 1975 and built the British disco and club chart file, at times 90 places plus breakers.

Billboard also printed Disco Sourcebooks. The June 1980 issue polled more than 3,500 discotheques. A club file with a DJ column, on paper, before the web.

Which magazines listed DJs?

The magazines were the public lists before profiles existed.

Mixmag printed on 1 February 1983 as a 16-page black-and-white Disco Mix Club sheet, cover: Shalamar. It became the British club magazine.

Groove launched in December 1989 in Frankfurt, founder Thomas Koch (DJ T.). Sven Väth wrote the first DJ charts. Around 2000 the magazine ran about 200 pages and up to 100,000 copies. Print stopped in 2018 after 175 issues. The site and the DJ charts still run in 2026.

DJ Mag launched in May 1991. The Top 100 appeared in issue 100 on 21 October 1993, still a staff list. In 1997 the magazine opened the vote: 700 postal ballots, Carl Cox at number 1. The list became a global poll, more than a million votes by 2016 (Attack on the DJ Mag film). A ranking, not a register. If you do not campaign, you are not on it.

Berlin had De:Bug from 1997 to 2014: electronic music plus media, closer to the club than to the superstar vote. Spex was a pop argument, not a DJ file.

Which international DJ database hit the web first?

The DJ List is based in Orlando and dates to 1997 (Tracxn). The claim was “world’s largest DJ directory”. The Internet Archive on 3 July 2007 shows the line “Top Ten DJs out of 160,383 Total DJs”. The site is still up. It is no longer the middle of the scene.

Resident Advisor: the living club file

Resident Advisor launched on 10 August 2001 in Sydney, Paul Clement and Nick Sabine, A$400 each to start. Full-time in the UK in 2006, Berlin office in 2007. Wikipedia: Resident Advisor. The Guardian in 2016: 3 million unique visitors a month, 1 million of them in the UK.

RA Pro later cites 6 million monthly users, 66 million unique users a year, 202 countries (RA Pro artist guide).

rave.report counts RA events from 2003 to 2025: 3.5 million events in total, 423,979 in 2025 alone. Berlin: 366 events per 100,000 residents, London 182.

Attack Magazine read the artist file on 26 May 2025 (The 1% Reality):

London, Berlin, Amsterdam: 29,996 profiles, about 25% of the RA file in three cities.

Acta read three public RA Berlin pages on 8 September 2026, not the whole file. Visible in the Next.js payloads:

• Events Berlin: 1,798 upcoming, areaId 34.
• Clubs Berlin: 2,327 venues with addresses. Bars, hotels, closed rooms sit in the same dump. Watergate and SchwuZ are still listed.
• Promoters Berlin: 3,980 names.
• Artist URLs live at /dj/{slug}. There is no public A-Z at ra.co/dj (404).

RA is the densest public club calendar. It is not a curated Berlin club file and not a wedding register.

Mix archives and tracklists

MixesDB launched on 16 December 2006. Crack Magazine counted more than 280,000 mixes, 15,000 charts and over 4,680,000 track entries before the June 2024 shutdown notice. The code was meant to die. The file survived as Mixes.wiki and again at mixesdb.com. The front page later named 346,948 mix pages. A set database, not a booking directory.

1001Tracklists does the same job faster and larger, with less hand curation. Mixcloud and SoundCloud store audio. Discogs stores releases. Neither is a DJ file.

Rankings, hire catalogues, Wikipedia

DJ Rankings shows a “Top 20k” and country pages (United States 4,872 DJs, UK 1,826, Germany 1,485 on the country index). The method is the operator’s, not a census.

DJ INDEX ranks by Spotify listeners. Calvin Harris led the UK board in the week of 7 September 2026 with 79.8 million monthly listeners. Streaming is not a club night.

Wikipedia’s List of DJs and the nationality lists are incomplete and editorial. Fine as an anchor, poor as an inventory.

DJ.COMMUNITY is a free directory plus press kit, aimed at underground and electronic DJs. No public profile count showed up in this research.

Global DJ List is a newer discovery and monetisation surface. The public homepage showed 53 DJs, 34 tracks, 25 mixes. Pre-register, not a world list.

Hire catalogues list DJs you can book for a party. Djaayz advertises 4,000+ verified DJs in the UK. GigSalad and The Knot sit on US weddings and events. Eventzone Berlin showed 295 DJs for the state; the result list also includes profiles outside Berlin (Chemnitz). A marketplace filter, not a scene file.

Which DJ database holds for Berlin?

Club and electronic: RA Berlin. 1,798 upcoming events on 8 September 2026. Attack: 12,829 Berlin RA profiles, 2,657 of them with at least one future gig.

Clubs as a union: Clubcommission Berlin, 250 to 350 members (clubs, promoters, bars, festivals, people). No public member list. That is the scale of a real club file, not RA’s 2,327 venues.

Party portals beside it: nightlife030, berliner.party, rausgegangen.de, tip-berlin.de. Thinner than RA, mixed with concerts and comedy.

Events and weddings: Eventzone, Eventartists, EVELY, Das Telefonbuch. Different demand, different file.
