Two choirs, one night. Essen is looking for 500 voices, Düsseldorf/Krefeld for 500. Extra-Tipp am Sonntag, January 2026. Dress rehearsal for both: Friday 19 February 2027, 19:30 to 22:30. Then Grugahalle.

Silas Edwin, Julie Okuesa, since 2005
Musician Silas Edwin runs the project, Nigerian, imprint in Bremen, Achterkampsweg 1A. In 2005 he founded singOUT Gospel with Julie Okuesa. Since then, city by city: 200 to 2,000 voices, six months of rehearsal, a concert in a large hall. Four to six projects a year, more than 25 cities, among them Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Essen, Kassel, Aachen, Mainz. Vocal coaches, soloists, a band from the Netherlands. A butterfly of steel and concrete. Ernst Friedrich Brockmann, Hanover, and Gerd Lichtenhahn. Roof spanning 80 by 80 metres with no inner posts. City council 1955, construction from October 1956 on the foundation of Josef Rings’ exhibition hall V, 1927, Krupp, destroyed in the war. Opened 25 October 1958, mayor Wilhelm Nieswandt: a central point of public, cultural, sporting and social life. Three days later Bill Haley, 200 police, chairs, a ban on dancing, broken glass. Beatles, 25 June 1966, two shows on the Bravo lightning tour. Rolling Stones 1965 with Brian Jones, 1973 three nights. Internationale Essener Songtage 1968, Frank Zappa and the Mothers in front of more than 13,000. Rockpalast nights 1977 to 1986, ARD and WDR, live from this hall. Listed monument since 26 October 2000. Official hall figures: 8,083 people max, 7,653 seated. Wikipedia writes 7,700 seated, 10,000 standing. In the 1990s demolition sat on the table. Kölnarena, Oberhausen, roofed stadiums. The hall stayed because it held a niche with the fair. 2024 AfD party conference, large protests outside. That is the middle of the building file: demolition talk and party conferences, not the opening and not the close. 2024 a new metallic-white façade, 2025 foyer and box office, from 2027 the large foyer under the hall.
