Richard Lucae, neo-Renaissance, construction from 1873, opened 20 October 1880 with Mozart’s Don Giovanni under Otto Dessoff. Kaiser Wilhelm I in the staircase: “I could not permit myself this in Berlin.” Final account 1882: 6.8 million marks, 5.4 of them on the city. Last performance before the destruction: 28 January 1944, Don Giovanni again. On the night of 22 March 1944 the house burned out. The ruin was stripped, 400 tonnes of iron, copper, lights. Thomas Mann wrote in 1953 to Max Flesch-Thebesius that keeping it was a matter of the heart. Rudi Arndt, 1965, on blowing it up: a million for the dynamite. The nickname Dynamit-Rudi stuck. That sits in the middle of the building file, not at the start and not at the end.
